Pick // Litter - February 2009

Apparently been in a bit of a nostalgic mood this month.

I was talking earlier this month about the awesomeness of random, unlabelled CD bingo that's been going on in my car lately due to the increasing shittiness of my iTrip. The result of this is a strange blend of new stuff, and other stuff I haven't heard in awhile. I'm completely shocked by the amount of outstanding music that I'd mostly forgotten about. Sometimes, it's a good thing when technology craps out on us, otherwise I might not've been reminded of how amazing some music really is.

I almost didn't have time to put this together this weekend, so I'm glad some time opened up tonight to finish it off. I'm gonna skip the cover art, though, I just don't feel like messing in Photoshop right now. In any case, here are the tracks that've been in heavy rotation for the past 4 weeks. I'm gonna try to throw up a Rapidshare link for y'all.

As always, feedback is fantastic. And if you've got anything awesome to turn me on to, please.. please do so =)

Please, Please, Please – Clayhill
This Is England OST
This track plays throughout the closing sequence in 'This is England', and is a brilliant reworking of an already brilliant Smiths tune. Credit to Brit Folk-Rockers Clayhill for nailing this one.

Burning – The Whitest Boy Alive
Dreams
Been getting ready for WBA's sophomore album 'Rules' after a solid showing on 2006's 'Dreams'.

Shakes Her Shoulders – Say Hi
The Wishes and The Glitch
.. also, Say Hi (to You Mom)'s sixth offering 'Oohs and Aahs' is in the pipes. The need to get reacquianted with these bands is unreal.

These Walls Are Thin – The Boxer Rebellion
Union
The Boxer Rebellion's 'Union' is mostly a mediocre offering, but for some reason I had this track on repeat for the better part of a day spent wandering downtown in the freezing cold. We must've bonded.

Model Homes – In-Flight Safety
We Are An Empire, My Dear
Halifax locals that kick all kinds of ass. I mean, I fell in love with this the first time I heard it, and ended up buying the whole CD on iTunes before it was even done playing the first time.

Handshake The Gangster – Hey Rosetta!
Into Your Lungs
More East Coastners?! Wtf is going on? This one shocked me. A friend of mine told me that I should give this a listen - given that he has notoriously terrible taste in music, I was skeptical. After hearing the album, I was shocked that they'd managed to stay off my radar for so long, especially since they were cast with the like of Tegan & Sara, Born Ruffians, and City and Colour (I <3 Dallas) at 2008's Verge Music Awards (XM Radio).

Sometime Around Midnight – The Airborne Toxic Event
The Airborne Toxic Event
Airborne Toxic Event. Live @ The Mod Club this Wednesday. Can't wait. The entire album has a ridiculous 22 playcount for the month.

Quiet As a Mouse – Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos
The Dust of Retreat
Still giving this album a good hard listen. Possible that it's the most consistently wicked album I've heard in a long, long time. I'd expect another track off it to appear next month - maybe 'Jen is Bringing the Drugs' or 'Skeleton Key'. I can't remember how I first came across Margot, but if you haven't heard them before, this is the album to make your introduction.

Countdown – Jupiter One
Jupiter One
Pre-party pump up track of the month. Good for those Revival nights. =)

Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts – Wolf Parade
Apologies To The Queen Mary
Got into a discussion with my brother about the crushing disappointment that was 'At Mt. Zoomer'. What a fucking mess. 'Queen Mary' = much better. It's easy to see how 'Sons & Daughters' got such heavy play a few years ago. Personal track trivia - the first time I heard this, I spent 2 days listening to it on repeat just to decide whether I liked it or not. Guess what? I did.

Lost Coastlines – Okkervil River
The Stand-Ins
Pretty sure this one needs no notes. Buy this album immediately.

Half In Love With Elizabeth – Mystery Jets
Twenty One
Mystery Jets are one of those bands that grow on you like a fungus. When you hear them the first time, they don't really sound like anything special.. but the hooks and melodies are so infectious that you might find yourself humming them in a meeting. And if it gets really bad, they might just stop that meeting and tell you to shut up (#truestory),

Feel.Love.Thinking.Of – Faunts
Single
The only electro-pop to make it in this month. I was getting concerned.

She Doesn’t Get It – The Format
Dog Problems
'.. but you talk so loud, that it calms me down..'. 'Dog Problems' is Lo-Fi brilliance.

I’m Not Crying, You’re Not Crying, Are You – Dear and The Headlights
Drunk Like Bible Times
Probably one of the best indie singles last year. Found it on a CD that I'd labelled 'I'm not sayin' we're bigger than Jesus or better than Jesus.. I was just sayin'. I kill me sometimes, lol.

The Modern Leper – Frightened Rabbit
The Midnight Organ Flight
Frightened Rabbit's 'Backwards Walk' was an anthem for me in the crappiness that was 2008. I've heard rumblings that they'll be making an appearance in T.O. sometime later this year. Problem is, this's been confirmed by NO ONE. Anyone know for sure?

She Said Oh Oh Oh, I Said Yeah Yeah Yeah - Gem
New
Something strange happening on the music scene in the Scandanavian countries for the last little while. Anyone else noticed that the stuff coming out of there's been exceptionally good? This catchy Gem track has been floating on and off playlists of mine since 2007 like a virus. Give it a listen and you'll hear why.

Thanks for making it all the way through =)

Have a great night, peeps.
